Hey.... it's been a while... been a quiet summer on the art front, but I've been fiddling around with Boys in Skirts lately, so have a few sketches!

Meet Sharkey! I drew him for the first time yesterday, on my break at work where I had no paper, so it was in my note book. But, Sharkey, in the flesh! (sort of..). He doesn't wear skirts, but he is a friend of the boys in skirts. Side Characters need more love. *nodnod*

Speaking of side Characters:
Meet.....! Ah, right, she doesn't have a name. She's Simon's class mate. She's short and she has spunk. Lots of spunk. I like her. I hope to get her in the story more. If you have name suggestions, I'm all ears.

Chase! (formally known as the character called "Eric" or The Extravert.) I think I've settled on his name (only time will tell) and I must apologize for not remembering that Kar suggested this name a long time ago. Anyway, I need to stop drawing in him in really skinny jeans.... Sex Pot Revenge is actually a brand label, before you ask... This sketch is one of the few that I've been very content with for more than 24h this summer. Fun hair is fun.

(On a style note... I think I've been looking at Momo's art too much. She's rubbing off on me. Which is okay, since I love her style, I just want my own style, ne?)

Lastly, a non Boys in Skits sketch:
An attempt to draw Ame in modern clothes, but I was having FAIL with anything below the neck. I just really like his face, despite the sketchyness (it's actually pretty good considering how shakey I've been lately). I forgot to draw his feathers... TAT

Anime Evolution sketches and Prints Sale

Back from Anime Evolution. I'm not going to go in depth about it, but Artist Alley was a huge disappointment for me. Poor sales, poor placement, bad noise pollution. I did enjoy hanging out with friends though, and I got a couple sketches done while I sat there:

Poor Simon. I couldn't resist. I saw a few guys in skirts at the convention and... well... yeah. There's no real excuse for this.

For those who can't read my scribbles Simon is saying "Okay, I know I'm a cross-dresser, but this is going too far..."

I had far too much fun drawing all those bows.

I was relabling some of my old posts the other week, and I noticed I only had one sketch of Katrina (which I took down, lol, because the sketches in the first post were making me twitch). Katrina is a very under appreciated character I think. She doesn't quite have the cool factor that Nix does, and she's... the most normal of that group, but I think she's pretty cool.
Anyway, I have this idea of Katrina being a 1920's mob boss and Nix being her number 1 hit man. There's no actual story line for it yet, but this is kinda what she would look like. mmmm pinstriped suits and fedoras. Please ignore the guns. I had no references with me.

Welcome to Korewa Yume, a sketch blog.

I have a hard time with Beginnings, so I think I'll just jump right in and start posting some sketches. The sketches seen here will from the realms of my dream worlds, mostly personal worlds, but there will probably be some fan art sketches. Comments are welcome.

Tonight, we feature some of my pretty characters*.

For my story 'Sight' one of the key characters, (namely Ame's mentor) are undeveloped, as far as name and face. I had tried to draw some concepts of Ame's mentor a while back, and they ended up looking up just like Ame, just older, and a little more feminine, which is *NOT* what I wanted. Ame and his mentor are not related, though they are the same race. They share the feather tuffs, and similar color hair, and they're gift of sight, but they needed to be distinguishable.
Then, quite randomly on work, sitting at my break, I doodled her out on a scrap of paper. And there she was. She still lacks a name, but the face is there. Some times all you need is some patience, I guess. Nisa was the same way. :)

I have a thing for long hair, I think. The first sketch I forgot to put the hair hanging down in the back, because if she has that much hair, gettin it all up would be pretty impossible.

Second sketch I did to show my friend Karalyn what she looked like, since I didn't have the first sketch on hand. I'm very happy with both.

And quickly, some sketches of Athene, from the Role Play.

The first two sketch were actually the first of the year, as I did them on New Years day, at probably 1 am. Karalyn asked who the really pretty person was (the lower of the two), and kinda was taken aback that it was Athene. Athene is a sadistic bastard, for the record. He uses magic to make him self not only terribly powerful, but also attractive and rather gender neutral. The top sketch is what I drew to show Kar what he looked like before all the magic. She looked horrified that I had made him so girly, haha.

This sketch I did last week. It's Athene, somewhere in time between the two sketchs above. He seems to be in deep thought. Things are kinda rough for him. Here, he is a powerful mage, but doesn't have the power over people, and wealth that he craves.

*Wait... do I have any ugly characters? I should look into this.
**I'm taking suggestions! Some Japanese, preferably, since Ame's name is Japanese.

I took a little vacation, and actually did little drawing, but I've got a couple of things from then, and some things from the past few days. Sketch Dump here we come! (And a whole lot of Nix, because he needs the attention. )

My boy Nix. He's pulling back his hair before he goes to spar for a bit. Drawing him in hakama makes me really want a pair of Nolwyn's hakama. They are damn comfortable... but I digress. This is the first decent sketch I've drawn of Nix in ages. He needs more love. Really.

And more Nix, looking a little... er... damaged? If I ever finish this (which I hope I do) it will be in ink, and hard black and white. This is a little different than my usual style, but I like how it's come out so far. I hope I can work out the rest...

Still in the RP realm. Just a small little sketch of Nix and Nisa being happy which is rare for two reasons: 1) I seem to have a problem writing happy things for my characters, and 2) Nix is usually paired with Katrina. But well, story changes toward the end. Nisa needed some happiness after it all. She got the short end of the stick far too often. Anyway, I was quite happy with the scribble, and it's cuteness.

Last doodle for the night:
I had a lot of free time on flight back from my trip, and I had my brush pens with me, so I decided to fool around with them a bit. I have an idea for a piece with Nisa which I wanted to do, but it required rocks. Lots of rocks. Rocks are something I've never really produced in color, let alone with brush pens. Actually, I've never done anything background related with my brush pens. Or anything, really. I'm happy with the result, for a first try. And suffering from Copic Marker Lust again. More colors would be wonderful...

I've been playing with Nix and Nisa in the Role Play realm lately and got a couple good sketches out of the it.

So, at one point in the RP (one point? don't mean several points?...) Nix goes a little psycho because he's overloaded by black magic and his god powers and well... kinda takes out a large portion of Tokyo. Opps. When Nisa finally gets to him, he's surrounded in a ball of black magic and bad memories. This is how he looks when she finds him, with his eyes all blacked out. Though, he'd have cooler clothes. I was just kinda lazy.

I don't know what got them into this situation, but Nisa is claiming her right to Nix. I think Kyro* probably tried to pull something, she'd be likely to do that. *grins* This drawing amuses me rather greatly. My friend Kar thinks Nix is kinda freaked because she's hugging his head into her boobs. heh. I like to think it's more the fact that Nisa is showing some signs of affection.
And look! I drew Nix in his cool jacket! Go me!

*Kyro, for the record, belongs to Karalyn. Kyro's a riot. I should draw her more often....

Kyro, Rogue Dragon

This is Kyro. She is loud, abusive, a little crazy, slightly manic; all of which spells FUN. She belongs to my dear friend Karalyn.
Kar has this fun little story called Apropos Cafe, one of several which Kyro stars in. I tried to draw Kez as well, but he wasn't working out so well. Also, note the failed perspective. Pencil in sketchbook.

More Kyro. A very scribbled drawing of dragon!Kyro with a dragon on her back. I did this with a brush pen of epic proportions. An amazing little thing from Japan, which will make me sad when it dies. Despite it's scribbliness, I really like this. Pose was referenced from a stock photo on deviantart: (Nudity Warning).

And lastly, a little Nix.

Actually tried to do some pencil shading on this. Hair turned out well, I think. Though, I think I need to make his bangs less... big. His head looks lopsided. ごめん、にさん！

The never ending war with pen and ink

Because I told myself I'd study for a midterm, I did art this afternoon. My midterm and art have nothing to do with each other, but I have this tendency to be creative when I'm I plan to do or should be doing school work.

Ink and I have a bit of a rivalry going. We rarely get along. I feel a bit like a lion tamer. Or like I'm trying to draw with a live snake... It just doesn't work very well. Most of what comes out is less than pleasant and I need to cover it up with color and hope no one notices. (This is part of the reason that my mind is boggled by the amount of favorites my mokona bookmark on deviantart.com has gotten.*)

I've tried various liners pens (Zig, Sakura, Copic) and even a ballpoint one by Koh-I-No0r. None of them really work for me. The Koh-I-Noor pen was always my favorite, it's never dried out, gave a good variation on line weight, and most of all it actually felt like using ink, because you could see it dry. Unfortunately, it's a bit like tight-rope walking these days; it has a tendency to randomly bubble and spurt ink.

I've been thinking, again, about getting a nibbed pen. One of those pens with interchangeable metal bits... Sort of like fountain pen, but, well, I'm not sure where then ink is contained. And then I remembered I had fountain pen! I actually have two, but the nib is broken off on one of them. I got them from my grandpa, ages back. So I pulled out my indian ink, and did a little doodle.

I really love this. I loved drawing it too. It was so much more satisfactory actually moving the ink around with a nib. I can get much more definition and weight and texture! And I don't have to worry about wrecking the nib, like on the liners... I also love how it looks rather like a lino block print. I did have some difficulty getting ink to come out of the pen regularly, I'm not sure what that was about. And I did have a big drop come out on my first attempt. That was pretty fun, :p.

Truth be told, I can do a similar effect with my Koh-I-Noor pen. I began to wonder why I haven't used it (I mean, besides the spurt...). Then I tried my copic markers with the indian ink...

On the right, you have me just going to the edge of the ink. On the left you have me going overtop of the ink. It does tend to smudge when I go over it.
That said, most of my inking process is done after I color something these days. I rely heavily on my glass topped desk as a light box.

The smudging is the very reason I wasn't using my Koh-I-Noor pen lately. it smudges very much when copics go over it. And even though I'm inking last, there's still touch ups to be done afterward. But this indian ink might be worth a try at least. It's also very black, which makes me happy.

After a comment from my good friend Rei, and thinking about my habit of drawing feminine boys, I thought I'd try to make a male character look a little more... male. So I added facial hair to Rowan, who is Katrina father in friends and I's role play. I usually avoid facial hair. It's hard to draw, and I find it only looks good on few people, even in real life. But, I think it works on Rowan. It ages him, which is good, because he is old enough to have a 20 year old daughter. (something else I need to work on: drawing older people!) I'm still getting used to it, but I think I'm going to keep the beard.

New girl....

Nix and a relatively new girl, Sparrow. Or Robyn, or Junko. She goes by a lot of names.

Over the summer I threw Nix and the others into another story setting, this one involving vampires. I actually have about 6 pages of this story written, it's quite amazing. It helps that I was camping and had no electricity and no internet when I came up with it. Anyway, the story progressed, and now I might have a sequel, if I ever finish the fist one of course. The sequel brings in Nix's sire, Sparrow, back into the picture. She's a bit proud and arrogant, but I like her. She's powerful and has sex appeal and isn't like your average vampire. She likes to make a connection with her victims before she kills (or turns) them. She gets them to trust her first.

Anyway, I hope that someday I finish these stories, even if just for fun. I don't know why I didn't make Nix a vampire sooner.....

I tried to draw her just Alucard, but it wasn't working, so she gets Seras too. :) She sqealed when she saw it, despite being rather sick, so I think she likes it.

Clockworks

Rei and I have been playing around with a comic idea of late. It was based off an old story I had, which I passed on to Rei, and we both resurfaced the idea. Tweaked it. Changed it. And now, it's set in a Steampunk setting. (It started out in a futuristic setting). This is some sketches of the main character, Kira and her clockwork bird.

Art blocks and inspiration

Well, after a month of many tiny stuggles with my art, I've started sketching again. I'm not sure it was a full art block, but there was angst, and many times where I wanted to throw my sketch book across the room, or where I chose not to sketch at all, because I feared it would just make me feel worse. But that seems to have passed. Which is fantastic, since I need to really get my ass in gear to have some stuff to sell at Anime Evolution in Vancouver, BC this summer. It will be my first Artist Alley experience.... I hope it goes well.

Back to the art block. It wasn't just my art that was blocked, but my writing stopped. All my stories just came to a standstill. I couldn't even work over old scences. That might have been worse than drawing part of this block, because that keeps me going. I write (in my head, granted. always in my head) while I drive to work, while I shelve or selfread at work, when I walk, when I wait to fall asleep. So, my writing left, inspiration gone, and there was this hole. There was this silence in my head. There were no other voices. It made me very sad.

But it came back. I didn't push it, let is take a break, sewed instead. And it came back. I think part what of helped was reading RE:Play by Christi Lijewski. She's an american manga-ka, and her art and story rock and it was genrally good overall for the inspiration.

So I brought up an story idea from oh... a year ago? And I was stoked about the thing that I wrote the majority of it in one day. I was addicted. What's it about, you ask? It's about boys in skirts. Yup. Boys in skirts, who start a club in university. I'm not going to say much more than that. But here's one of the characters:

I really love his hairstyle. He has the most fun hair to draw. He's very easy to draw too. He mostly wears long light skirts. He's in his third year, and is a Psychology major. He's quiet, and reserved, and a passicfist. So, he gets beat up a lot. Poor guy.

This is a companion piece to the Fai sketch I posted a bit back. While I was working on the color on Fai's piece, my friend Kar asked in fangirlish delight if I was planning on drawing Kurogane to match. I'll admit, I hadn't even thought of it. But it seemed only natural, to do draw Kuro as well. This one should be fun. The background is going to be in reds and oranges. I can't wait to start on it.

*So, the only thing I lost on my vacation to Toronto was my very lovely friend, my mechanical pencil. It was very sad. We'd been through a lot. And I can draw with normal pencils only for so long before I'm sharpening them after every minute. So I headed off to my favorite art store Opus and picked up and new one. And I found the exact same as my old pencil, just in purple. huh. We take what we're given.

Paper vs Paper vs Paper

I'm loving my new copics, but paper is a whole new thing to deal with when using markers. I first thought bristol board was going to be my new best friend, but it's not. At all. It bleeds like a maniac. Way more than I expected, or want, really. Maybe it's the bristol I'm using. It's old, (probably 10 years) Strathmore stuff, I think. I've never had too much of a problem with until now.

Anyway, I've decided to pursue other papers. My sketch book paper is better. It's really nice for quick sketching with copics. Fast stuff, messy, stuff. (The sketch books I use, by the way are these: Essential Wire Bound Sketch books form Opus. They are very nice.)

I picked up some Letraset bleed proof marker paper a couple weeks ago. Holy Paper Batman! This stuff is nice. Doesn't bleed at all. Not even onto the next page, despite this stuff being very very thin. Which is another nice aspect: I can trace line art without a lightbox! It holds the color amazingly well. It's super smooth and bright white. 10 points!..... Until I took my microns onto it. And Koh-I-Nor pen. They smudge like the world is ending in 24 hours by a very large comet. *sigh* The only pen I have that doesn't smudge is my Copic Multiliner, but I only have size .005, which is ultra tiny lines. I like something with a little more substance. And I haven't had a chance to go buy more Multiliners. But would still feel bad because I have multitudes of microns that I don't know what to do with.

Which brings me to my last test subject: Card Stock. I had some scraps around from my test prints. This seems like the best bet so far. It takes both ink and markers well. No smudging and very little bleeding. Woo!

Anyways, enough of me rambling, here's a visual comparison:

I'm working on a set of Avatar: the Last Airbender bookmarks. This is the Ang one. First we have the card stock, very quickly scribbled (note the "head wtf?"). I colored the yellow with the wrong shade. opps. Middle is my sketchbook. You'll notice it's a little dirty looking in comparison. And last, the Letraset paper, and the glorious smudging.

I'd love feed back on this... on both the bookmark, my copic use and the papers. :)
